Brazillian President signs digital decree
Brazil is expected to run its first commercial digital television transmission in Sao Paulo within six to eight months.
Tests are already underway in Sao Paulo following President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s signing of the decree that will see the adoption of the Japanese ISDB standard after months of political wrangling. The decree gives Brazil’s national TV networks 18 months to begin commercial service in the countries other cities with the plan to cover the whole country within seven years. The decision has attracted much local criticism and leaves the real possibility that neighbouring Chile and Argentina, which are torn between the European DVB and North American ATSC standards, will opt for rival technologies. |
